About Words Alive
Through collaborations with 80+ partners and with support from 950 volunteers, each year Words Alive inspires a love of reading for 5,000+ youth in San Diego facing extraordinary life circumstances such as unstable housing, poverty, foster care, and impact by the justice system.
Founded in 1999, our research-based programs are designed to ignite a love of reading by connecting youth and families with trained Words Alive volunteers and joyful reading enrichment activities to bring books alive. Our core programs include:
- Bilingual early literacy workshop series (6 weeks) for parents and young children, connecting reading and play.
- Weekly read aloud sessions in elementary classrooms for a school year, led by a caring volunteer “reading role model.”
- Bi-weekly book group style sessions with teens exploring relevant texts through discussion, writing, and art.
We read diverse and culturally relevant texts to help learners meaningfully connect with the stories shared. We deliver more than 20,000 new books each year, increasing 100% of our learners’ personal libraries.
