| Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity | College campuses nationwide continue to rely on Blue Light Emergency Stations as highly visible symbols of safety and rapid emergency response. However, the current generation of stations often lacks modern features that match today’s security and student engagement needs. Pedestal PRO, an industry leader in security mounting solutions, seeks to reimagine these towers and wall stations for BYU’s campus safety program, with the potential to scale innovations nationally. The opportunity is twofold: first, to integrate cutting-edge security technologies (VoIP intercoms, cameras, gunshot detection, radio repeaters, IoT sensors) into a streamlined, durable design; and second, to create interactive modules that not only improve security but also increase student engagement with the towers. This includes features that foster safety awareness, provide real-time campus information, or gamify student interactions with the system. This project challenges students to think at the intersection of mechanical engineering, software development, IoT integration, and human-centered design. They will balance rigorous safety and compliance requirements with creative brainstorming that enhances user adoption and trust. The outcome will be a working prototype and a set of engagement strategies tailored for BYU’s campus, with broader scalability in mind.

| Project Synopsis: Expected Results | By end of Fall, deliver a design portfolio with at least 3 viable configurations of upgraded Blue Light systems. By mid-Spring, build and test a working prototype that integrates at least 2 advanced security features and 1 interactive student engagement module. By end of Spring, provide a complete product design package—including CAD files, prototype testing data, and engagement strategy recommendations—that Pedestal PRO can advance toward manufacturing.
